I've lossed ranged exchanges between Spanish Conquistadors and Portugese Crossbowmen and the only logical explanation I have is armor.
Lower damage does become notable when you are facing top tier European troops though. Especially the tier 2 Portugese Crossbowmen. In longer/larger battles their ammo is going to be brought to zero pretty quickly too.Ĭrossbow troops are great. And while these guys ARE pretty ridiculous they are also made of paper and tend to become very retarded when doing anything else but holding position. The only reliable top tier (faction) archer are the Lana Horse Archers. Its possible that they may have spawned both but the retarded AI prioritized the higher base damage without considering their great power draw skill. In-game though it seemed like 90% of my ranged troops used muskets.
For example the Shah top tier archer unit has great power draw and msikets + bows. The game tends to force musket use for top tier ranged otherwise - Even if they have bows. The opposite is generally a bigger problem, as guns in such mods tend to be stupidly strong (like 1860 mod) or bows illogically weak. Considering that you have to actively invest in power draw to make this happen I don't see this as a flaw. Most mods with muskets + archers tend to have archers be superior at high proficiency.
